The Department of Design at the Ramez G. Chagoury Faculty of Architecture, Arts and Design (RC-FAAD), Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), organized on February 10, 2018, a workshop titled, “Photography Now: How to Express Yourself through Photography.”
This workshop targeted high school students interested in majoring in Photography and communicating through visuals, lighting, emotions, and aesthetics. The session aimed to understand concept development, lighting techniques, composition rules, and post processing: a fantastic introduction to the passionate world of Photography.
Topics included a brief history of Photography, composition rules, camera controls, and lighting techniques. Students were then divided into three groups to learn how to operate a Digital Single-lens Reflex Camera (DSLR). Afterward, they were asked to complete a small exercise on how to frame, because at the end of the day it all boils down to camera positioning and frame composition.
Students were also given an exercise in lighting technique, as there are myriad ways to use flash and the purpose of any lighting exercise is to use the flash effectively. The next part of the session focused on how to develop a concept, edit photographs, and present them for an exhibition or a photography competition.
For his part, Assistant Professor at the FAAD Dr. Noel Nasr presented the Photography program, and alumni Photography students later introduced themselves and their work. Finally, “Certificates of Participation” were distributed to all participants.
The purpose of this innovative workshop is to introduce the younger generation to new ways of experiencing the world through art and the medium of photography.
